What graduate degree would be best for someone who would eventually want to open a bed and breakfast?

Can you answer Laura Beth’s question about Degrees?:

I am working in sales and account management at a large company that will pay for a graduate degree in any field that I choose. I’m only 26 and it will be a long time before I will be able to afford this but I want to be working toward the goal, beginning with my degree. What degree would be useful for starting a small business in the future but useful in big business while I work toward my goal?

Degrees Feedback: As far as starting your business, you don’t need a degree of any type, but I would suggest accounting so that you know how to handle the money. That would be useful with the big business as well. Department of labor states that 79% of business owners have no degree at all.

Degrees Feedback: No graduate degre is needed to own a bed and breakfast. If you want to speed up the process of getting to your goal, pick the degree that will boost your income the most. Then save for the down payment on the b and b.

Degrees Feedback: I think any advanced education in Business/Finance/Entrepreneur would be fantastic - also think about Hotel Management, Profitable Recreation, or even Client Relations. B&Bs are WONDERFUL! The industry needs more people to take them seriously like you are obviously doing. Good luck!

Degrees Feedback: you don’t mention what type of firm you are at. what is the industry ? what’s your position, level of management and jobbdescription. ? do you set strategy or are you an account axecutive ?
i ask because if you are being groomed for management, i think an MBA will be a good fit for you. you might specialize in marketing or management at different stages of a prodcut development.

if your job entails being in daily contact with hotels and small mom and pop b&b, then you may justfy the company you’re employed at paying for graduate studies in the field of hotel management and tourism. such schools are very expensive and if they agree to fund you, you should jump at the chance. of course you will have to sign some sort of contract promissing not to jump ship after you get your degree and go and start a b&b.

Degrees Feedback: An MBA will give you all the best components of managing the business. You dont need to worry about the day to day details, as much as the larger picture..the management and marketing of your business. You’ll learn the skills you need to hire good people to ensure that your goals are being met, how to expand and market the business, and how to get the most return on your investment.

Anyone who tells you that you dont need a degree doesnt have one.

    Good Luck
